In a survey of more than 381,000 household appliances, Consumer Reports calculated that 6 percent of respondents reported having problems with cooking elements not lighting or heating up the way that they should, while 5 percent of people reported refrigerators that didn’t cool properly. An even larger 11 percent of people said that their dishwashers no longer cleaned their dishes fully.

Avoid Breakdowns by Deep Cleaning Your Appliances

Many people use the holiday season as a time to deep clean their homes anyway. While you are at it, spend a little extra time cleaning and give your household appliances some extra attention.

Take some time in the coming days and weeks to perform some appliance maintenance. Pull the fridge away from the wall and clean out the dust from the mechanical coils . Deep clean your oven and stove top, making sure all of the heating elements and gas burners heat and ignite fully. In addition, clean your dishwasher by setting a single dishwasher-safe cup of white vinegar on the top rack and running a full cycle. Simply performing these extra steps will help to ensure that you have a happier, more stress-free holiday season this year.

Schedule a Cooking Test Run

Whether or not you have used your kitchen appliances recently, before the holidays is the perfect time to test them all out. A couple of weeks before beginning to prepare your holiday meal, turn the oven on to bake a casserole or batch of cookies. Then, test out the dishwasher by loading it up with all the dirty dishes and making sure everything comes out clean.
